Mark Gay Wins Remington Challenge with 395x400

By: Robert B.Miller

The Remington Challenge Skeet Championships was held May 25,26 and 27th. There were 44 four gun shooters in
attendance for this event. I would first like to thank Jay Bunting of Remington Arms Company for his support of the shoot. Each shooter at sign up received a Remington hat, a handsome Remington pin and decal
.
Miller's Gun Center Inc. of New Castle, DE provided the traditional Remington Challenge T-shirts. This year's version is a pale yellow with the Remington Challenge logo on the back of the shirt which is artwork originally done on a pin for this shoot years ago. The artwork was originally done by our good friend Mike Stasio.

Jay Bunting was in attendance driving all the way up from Somerville, NC and made his presence known right away winning the Doubles Event on Friday with a 98x100 on a beautiful but breezy day. Mike Stasio was AA1 with 96, William Walmsley A1 with 96, B1 Kenneth Brown 98, C1 Marvin Coppage 88, and D1 Raymond Stas 78. The Lady Champion was Rebecca Myers with 89.

On Saturday morning to my surprise there was only one hundred straight broken in 12 Ga. It was a great morning but just a little breezy enough to play a few tricks with them. James Burch of Upper Marlboro, MD won the Gauge Championship outright. Jay Bunting took AA1 with a solid 99, A1 Ben Galioto 98, B1 Russell Paul 99, C1 Anthony Swyka 98, D1 Olin White 93 and E1 Raymond Stas 90. The Lady Champion was Kimberly Fleischut with 99. In the afternoon in the 28 Gauge Event again only one 100. The lone 100 was shot by Ed Calabrese of Franklin Square, NY to take the Gun Championship uncontested. Mark Gay shooting on our squad smoked 99 for AA1 after a shootoff with Clay Gormish. A1 Joe Mclnntre 97, B1 Kenneth Brown 98, C1 Geoffrey Turner 96, D1 Raymond Stas 84 and the Lady Champion again Kim Fleischut with 93. On Saturday night Buck's Catering put on a very nice chicken dinner on a beautiful night and it appeared everyone had a good time.

It was breezy on Sunday but it was another beautiful day pushing 90 which is pretty hot for Memorial Day Weekend but great if you were at the beach. In the 20 Gauge Event there were three 100's shot. Jay Bunting, James Burch and Mark Gay. Mark won the 20 Gauge Championships shootoff. Jay Bunting took AA1 and Burch AA2.A1 Steven Meyers 99, B1 Bill Teti 99, C1 Ralph Wellens 96, 01 Skeete Smitha 92 who was also Sub Junior Champion. The Lady Championships this event went to Rebecca Myers 92. On to the .410 and we had the .410 wind or some version of it depending on when you shot. Mark Gay and Jay Bunting both broke 99's on my squad and both guys shot fantastic. They shot off for the Championship with Mark edging out Jay for Gun Champion. Jay took AA1. A1 Clay Gormish 96, B1 William Walmsley 94, C1 Ralph Wellens 92 and 01 Skeete Smitha with 83.The Lady Champion was Kim Fleischut with 91.

The High Overall Championship was won by Mark Gay of Mt Airy, MD with 395x400 and Mark hammered targets all weekend. Mark was closely pursued by Jay Bunting with 394 for AA1 HOA. A1 HOA John Zema 386, B1 Russell Paul 387, C1 Anthony Swyka
378, D1 Ralph Wellens 366 and the Lady HOA went to Kimberly Fleischut with 373x400.The two man team HOA went to the team of Bunting and Stasio.

Thank you to Jeff Fleischut for doing your usual excellent job and the same goes to Bud Scott and Jeff Andrews. Thank you to Joe Weinbrecht and all the other volunteers that you can not run a shoot without doing whatever needs to be done and just getting it done, period. The place ran like a well oiled clock and mother nature cooperated it was great. I hope all of you that attended had a good weekend and we hope to see you next year at The Remington Challenge.
